| Introduction | Brucella is a genus of Gram-negative semi-spherical bacteria. These bacteria can infect humans and a variety of livestock, including cows, pigs, goats, sheep, and camels. Infections with the bacterium (brucellosis) typically result in gastrointestinal distress, however other symptoms can include hepatosplenomegaly, arthritis, myocarditis, male infertility, and pregnancy abortion. Vaccines are available but not for human use. Treatment of infection typically consists of doxycycline and either rifampicin or gentamycin. |
