| Introduction | Prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2α) is a prostanoid derived from prostaglandin H2, with prostaglandin E2 as an intermediate chemical. PGF2α can be converted into a PGF2β by altering the stereochemistry of the hydroxyl group on carbon 9. PGF2α is upregulated in response to oxytocin and acts on the corpus luteum to reduce progesterone production. 8-epi-prostaglandin F2α is a stereoisomer of PGF2α (carbon 8 is the chiral centre). This isoprostane causes vasoconstriction in the kidneys and promotes platelet aggregation. |
