Introduction | Fibrin Degradation Products (FDP) are protein fragments released when blood clots are degraded, typically by plasmin. These fragments include fragment D, fragment E, and D-dimer. Fragments E and D are produced from fibrin and fibrinogen degradation, while fragment E and D-dimer are produced from cross-linked fibrin. FDPs are usually below 10 μg/ml in plasma, and typically increase (while staying below 10 μg/ml) after minor thrombotic events. Concentrations over 10 μg/ml may be indicative of coagulopathy or cancer. |
