Wide-Spread Testing for COVID-19: Controlling a Pandemic

Posted on 2020-04-06

Global efforts to delay and control the spread of COVID-19 have increased with an aggressive urgency since the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the outbreak a pandemic, on March 11th.

The most effective, wide-spread advice to prevent viral transmission is to self-isolate and avoid unnecessary contact with other people. It is estimated that 60% of COVID-19 positive individuals show mild or no symptoms, yet they could still be infectious to others.

One of the main ways to stay safe during the outbreak is practising good hygiene. Abbexa is pleased to offer Face Masks and Hand Sanitizers that should be used regularly, particularly when in public spaces. Please see Abbexa’s COVID-19 Advice for other tips on staying safe in this crisis.

Whilst the search for treatment continues, the next step focuses on testing, which is imperative in tackling the outbreak. Testing is a powerful and critical tool in monitoring and understanding the prevalence of a pandemic.

Most people can expect to experience mild symptoms and are likely to recover at home. However, test results will allow informed decision-making on who they come into contact with. Isolating known cases strengthens the effort to slow the rate of transmission, and alleviates pressure on health-care services, which can become rapidly overwhelmed if the demand for critical care surges.

Testing should be considered if an individual meets any of the following criteria:

  • They are experiencing, or have recently experienced, any of the symptoms of COVID-19. The main symptoms include: a new and continuous cough, a high temperature, and shortness in breath.
  • They have come into contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
  • They have returned from an area of high incidence of COVID-19

Testing is a crucial stage in tackling the outbreak, but Abbexa also continues to offer SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 products that support scientific communities working towards vaccination and treatments for COVID-19.

It is the combined effort of public actions and scientific research that will eventually control this global pandemic.
