| Introduction | Deoxyribonuclease I (DNAse I, gene name DNASE1) is a protein that degrades DNA and chromatin (DNA-protein complex) by hydrolysing the phosphoester bond between the 3’ carbon on one nucleotide and the phosphate group on the next nucleotide. It is found in serum as a nucleic acid scavenger and contributes to DNA fragmentation during apoptosis. Mutations in DNase I that result in reduced DNA degradation cause increased serum DNA levels, leading to immune system dysregulation and a lupus-like disease. |
