DNase I (also known as Deoxyribonuclease I), is an endonuclease of the DNase family coded for by the DNASE1 gene. DNase I is a nuclease that cleaves DNA at phosphodiester linkages that are adjacent to a pyrimidine nucleotide, yielding 5'-phosphate-terminated polynucleotides with a free hydroxyl group on position 3', usually producing tetranucleotides. It acts on single and double-stranded DNA and chromatin. It is also one of the deoxyribonucleases responsible for DNA fragmentation during apoptosis.
