| Introduction | H2A Histone, Family Member X (H2AFX) is a histone that occasionally replaces the more common “conventional” H2A histone in nucleosomes. H2AFX is often phosphorylated at serine 139 to form γH2AFX after DNA is damaged, especially near double-strand breaks. γH2AFX acts as a binding site for the MDC1 protein to initiate DNA repair, and is frequently used as a measure of DNA breakages. H2AFX mouse double-knockouts were sensitive to radiation and had various cell cycle defects, while single-knockouts were more susceptible to developing cancer. |
