Human Procalcitonin (PCT) Protein is a recombinant protein expressed in E. coli, fused to an N-terminal 6 His tag. Procalcitonin (PCT) is a precursor of Calcitonin, which is involved in calcium homeostasis. It consists of 116 amino acids and is produced by parafollicular cells (C cells) in the thyroid and by the neuroendocrine cells in the lung and the intestines. Procalcitonin levels rise in response to inflammation, particularly bacterial infection, and it is an important marker for determining the severity of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. It can also be used to differentiate patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) from those with sepsis, when compared with levels of other inflammatory cytokines such as IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-alpha and CRP.
