Human Protein-S100BB is a recombinant full length protein expressed in E. coli. S100B (S100 calcium binding protein B) is a glial-derived protein is a well-established biomarker for neurological injury severity and prognosis. It functions as a neurotrophic factor and neuronal survival protein during development of the central nervous system. S100B is glial-specific and is expressed at high levels in brain primarily by astrocytes. S100B is only expressed by NG2-expressing cells and a subtype of mature astrocytes that line blood vessels. Increased S100B levels in the brain can increase pathogenic responses to injury by accelerating neuroinflammatory processes. Chromosomal rearrangements and altered expression of this gene have been implicated in several types of diseases, primarily neurological and neoplastic, such as Alzheimer's disease, Down's Syndrome, epilepsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, melanoma, and type I diabetes. S100B regulation using melittin is a proposed treatment of epilepsy.
