| Introduction | Leptospira is a genus of bacteria that are charactarised by their thin, corkscrew-like shape; the name is a compound word of “leptos”, an ancient Greek word for “thin”, and the Latin word “spira”, meaning “coil”. There are 13 known species of Leptospira that cause disease in humans (leptospirosis), with symptoms including headaches, myalgia, fever, kidney failure, pulmonary haemorrhage, and meningitis. Pathogenic species are differentiated from saprophytic species by their cultivation temperature; pathogenic species require a higher temperature to grow, typically around 14°C. Leptospira species are transmitted via the urine of infected mammals, and infections are treated using a wide variety of antibiotics; renal dialysis and corticosteroids are used for more severe cases. |
