| Introduction | Factor VIII (F8, also known as anti-hemophilic factor AHF) is an essential blood-clotting protein normally bound to and inactivated by von Willebrand Factor (VWF). Injury causes F8 to bind to Factor IX instead, creating a chain of chemical reactions that form a blood clot. F8 is found on the X chromosome, and deficiency in it causes Haemophilia A (usually in males). The World Health Organisation have listed F8 on their list of essential medicines, however improper screening of donated F8 in the 1980s led to over 10,000 people worldwide being infected with HIV and Hepatitis C. |
