| Introduction | Alkaline Phosphatase, Intestinal (ALPI) is one of four similar alkaline phosphatases found in mammals. All four share similar homology within species and carry out similar phosphoester hydrolysis reactions, however they are expressed in different conditions and in different tissues. ALPI is a digestive brush-border enzyme secreted by enterocytes. This enzyme is a component of the gut mucosal defense system and is thought to function in the detoxification of lipopolysaccharide, and in the prevention of bacterial translocation in the gut. |
