SARS-CoV-2 Spike Glycorotein (Omicron B.1.1.529 Variant)

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19) Spike Glycoprotein, Omicron Variant is a full length soluble with foldon trimerization motif, mutated Furin recognition site and 6 stabilising mutations (F817P, A892P, A899P, A942P, K986P and V987P), based on/modified from Amanat et al, 2020 and Hsiehet al, 2020.

The SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein (S protein) is a viral protein that allows the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into human cells. The protein forms trimers on the viral capsid and binds to human Angiotensin Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) located on the cell surface. The protein has a cleavage site between the S1 and S2 subunits that is targeted by the human enzyme Furin, and it may also cause the development of a syncytium (cell fusion). Antibodies to S protein can prevent viral entry as well as target the virus for further immune action.

The B.1.1.529 (Omicron) variant was first identified in South Africa. It has many concerning spike protein substitutions, some of which are known from other variants to be associated with reduced susceptibility to available monoclonal antibody therapeutics or reduced neutralization by convalescent and vaccinee sera.
